CenturyLink provider overview

CenturyLink offers a large fiber internet network, bundles with DIRECTV and home phone services. Plans are customizable for both home and business use.

CenturyLink home internet does not require a contract, but speeds can vary widely depending on your service area. In fact, there may only be one plan available at your address. The provider offers service in 16 states, primarily in the Northwest, West and northern Midwest.

What we like about CenturyLink

  • No contract internet and home phone plans – CenturyLink doesn’t have pesky long-term agreements and early termination fees to worry about

  • Bundle with DIRECTV to get the complete package – Though not required, the CenturyLink and DIRECTV bundling option is great if you need both TV and internet

  • No data caps – CenturyLink doesn’t impose any data caps on its internet plans, so you are free to browse all you want

Things to consider about CenturyLink

  • Limited availability – Fiber optic service is only available in select cities

  • High fees – CenturyLink charges a $17 monthly fee for modem and router rental. Avoid this fee by purchasing your own equipment

  • Slow DSL speeds – If fiber isn’t available in your area, you’ll only have access to up to 100 Mbps

What to know about CenturyLink

Compare CenturyLink to Xfinity and other providers

CenturyLink’s fiber plans are solid in value, and the provider offers more consistent long-term rates compared to other providers, which reduces worry about potential price jumps. However, if you can only get DSL from CenturyLink, you may want to shop for another provider that offers cable, fiber, 5G or satellite — which are all faster than DSL.

DSL internet speeds are usually under 25 Mbps, so you might experience some lag when streaming in 4K Ultra HD if you have other devices connected to your Wi-Fi. Switch to standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) streaming to prevent lag or to allow another device to stream simultaneously.

To compare CenturyLink with over a dozen other providers, just select another ISP from the drop-down menu at the top of the third column.
