What we like about CenturyLink

Things to consider about CenturyLink
-
Limited availability – Fiber optic service is only available in select cities

High fees – CenturyLink charges a $17 monthly fee for modem and router rental. Avoid this fee by purchasing your own equipment
-
Slow DSL speeds – If fiber isn’t available in your area, you’ll only have access to up to 100 Mbps

What to know about CenturyLink
CenturyLink DSL technology
CenturyLink’s non-fiber plans operate on DSL internet, which is an outdated technology type running on older copper telephone lines. While this connection type isn’t typically the best option, it has much wider availability than fiber and can keep even rural customers connected.
CenturyLink internet plan deals and promotions
- New customers can get a free modem and installation when they pick the Fiber Gigabit plan
- Streaming TV customers are eligible for discounts on some streaming services like Hulu, STARZ and Sling TV
CenturyLink installation
CenturyLink installation can cost between $25 and nearly $150, but there are no installation costs if you opt for a fiber plan.
CenturyLink customers have two options for installation:
- Standard installation: For a $25 fee, CenturyLink will send you a self-installation kit for a QuickConnect modem setup
- Professional installation: A CenturyLink technician will visit your address for installation. This can cost up to $149
CenturyLink equipment
CenturyLink includes a modem free of charge with select plans and may waive the installation fee for new customers. Make sure to check the fine print, however, as there is a $17.00/mo. equipment rental fee on other plans. Refer to our customer service page to learn more about CenturyLink bill pay.
Compare CenturyLink to Xfinity and other providers
CenturyLink’s fiber plans are solid in value, and the provider offers more consistent long-term rates compared to other providers, which reduces worry about potential price jumps. However, if you can only get DSL from CenturyLink, you may want to shop for another provider that offers cable, fiber, 5G or satellite — which are all faster than DSL.
DSL internet speeds are usually under 25 Mbps, so you might experience some lag when streaming in 4K Ultra HD if you have other devices connected to your Wi-Fi. Switch to standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) streaming to prevent lag or to allow another device to stream simultaneously.
To compare CenturyLink with over a dozen other providers, just select another ISP from the drop-down menu at the top of the third column.
